Kanye West is doing more for sustainable fashion. The rapper fashion designer unveiled November 7 a new shoe design at the Fast Company Innovation Festival. The shoes incorporate pond-source algae.
Alongside Yeezy designer Steven Smith, West announced the new eco-friendly design, “Eco-concerns are intersecting with what we do. This is just the beginning of the future that Kanye envisioned for us to start working on,” said Smith.
The shoes were made in Atlanta with foam sourced from pond algae. The other part of the shoe was made from petroleum-based ethylene-vinyl acetate. Atlanta-manufacturing is part of West’s vision for the company to be made in America.
West said of the future plans for manufacturing, “Within the next two years our goal is to bring the manufacturing back to America. South America, North America. Bring it back stateside, and also to present jobs for people back here.”
West said the company would like to have its own hydroponic farm. “We’re going to be farming and going seed to sole,” West told the audience at the festival. Using algae to make foam shoes avoids the fossil fuels typically used in the process.
This is just another part of Yeezy’s quest for sustainable fashion. The rapper gave an interview recently where he discussed more environmental plans for the brand.
