New Petitions to Sign This Week: Protect Sharks in Florida, Ban Gas-Powered Cars, Save the Dugong in China, and More!

Unfortunately, the world is not a very peaceful or safe place for many individuals. From conflict to abuse to exploitation, there is so much cruelty inflicted on both humans and animals. While this can get disheartening and difficult to hear about, petitions are a great way to use your voice for good. Just by signing one, you are a part of helping those who are not treated fairly. 1. Help Protect Sharks in Florida

Recently, two men in Florida engaged in a horrific case of animal abuse. The men were at a beach and spotted a black-tip shark and one of them decided to pull the shark onto the beach while a crowd of beachgoers watched in horror. A woman, who was recording the incident, asked the men to stop but they just laughed her off. Then, one of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed the shark through the head multiple times. Sadly, people in Florida are legally allowed to murder black-tip sharks in any way they want. Please sign this petition to urge Florida lawmakers to create laws that will protect sharks and charge these sadists with animal cruelty!

2. Urge Authorities to Investigate Gymnastics Australia for Abuse

A couple of years ago, an investigation into Gymnastics Australia discovered many of the athletes had experienced abuse. Some of the allegations included body shaming by coaches, medical negligence, and even physical and sexual abuse. Gymnastics Australia has stated that it wants to engage in a restorative justice approach with the victims but only if they sign a non-disclosure agreement. Please sign this petition to urge the Department of Justice and Community Safety Victoria to investigate the matter themselves!

3. Call on Starbucks to Stop Fighting Against Unionization

Despite Starbucks being one of the most successful businesses in the world, it has recently been engaging in union-busting incidents, including closing stores that Support unions and firing a union leader who had worked for a store for 13 years. Unions give workers a chance to have better wages and benefits, but apparently, Starbucks doesn’t want that. Please sign this petition to put pressure on Starbucks to stop fighting against unions and hire back the union organizers they’ve fired!

4. Tell Wealthy Countries to Compensate Pakistan for Driving Climate change

One-third of Pakistan is currently underwater and more than 1,300 people have already lost their lives. Extreme weather events like this flood are largely caused by Climate change and yet Pakistan doesn’t even contribute to one percent of global emissions. The real culprits of Climate change are wealthy countries like the United States, China, and the United Kingdom, among others. Please sign this petition to ask these countries to compensate Pakistan for the destruction they’ve caused and limit their emissions.

5. Demand Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Kennel Operations

A community member in Bakersfield, California called authorities when they noticed a strong stench coming from three different houses. Search warrants were issued and it was discovered that the houses were being used as illegal animal kennels. On top of that, 11 dogs were found dead and 29 others were in bad shape. Luckily, many of the remaining dogs survived and were returned to their humans. Please sign this petition to urge authorities to create protocols that help identify illegal operations like this so more dogs don’t have to suffer!

6. Pressure New Zealand’s Government to Protect Sea Lions

Sea lions have returned to New Zealand’s mainland after avoiding it for around 200 years because humans hunted them. This particular species of sea lion is rare, with only about 10,000 of them left. Conservation efforts have helped sea lions return, but the government must protect their habitats and implement safeguards against illegal hunting. Please sign this petition to demand New Zealand’s government continue to protect sea lions! 

7. Tell States to Ban Gas-Powered Cars

The influx of extreme weather events we’ve seen in recent months has given us further proof that Climate change is an imminent threat. California recently took a major step in the right direction when they decided that all new vehicles sold in the state after 2035 have to be emission-free. Not only will this help curb Climate change, but it will also take toxins out of the environment that are damaging to human and wildlife’s health. Please sign this petition to urge the rest of the United States to follow California’s lead! 

8. Urge Chinese Authorities to Help Save the Dugong

Dugongs, or “sea cows”, are currently facing extinction because their food, seagrass, is dying off, and they’re getting caught in fishing nets. Dugongs are the only vegetarian marine mammal on earth yet they are now “functionally extinct” in Chinese coastal waters. Human Pollution and construction have destroyed their food source, and overfishing and poaching have killed many of these majestic creatures. Please sign this petition to urge Chinese authorities to help save the Dugong! 

9. Demand Congress Protect Democracy from Covert Corporate Donations

It was recently discovered that billionaire Barre Seid donated $1.6 billion to Marble Freedom Trust, a “dark money group” that gives money to right-wing politicians. The Supreme Court’s ruling in 2010 in Citizens United allowed groups like this to raise and Donate all the money they want to influence elections and politicians’ decisions, without even having to reveal their activities. Luckily, Congress is considering a few bills which would help fight some of this corruption and mandate transparency. Please sign this petition to pressure Congress to pass these important bills!
