Starting the day with physical activity like cycling to work or enjoying a brisk walk could have more than just physical benefits; it may also enhance memory and cognitive functions. According to a recent study conducted by University College London, engaging in just 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity paired with at least six hours of sleep could significantly boost cognitive performance the next day.
Dr. Mikaela Bloomberg, the lead author of the study, emphasized the dual benefits of good sleep and physical exercise for brain health. Previous research has consistently linked physical activity to both immediate cognitive improvements and a lowered risk of dementia. The enhancements are thought to be related to increased blood flow to the brain and the stimulation of neurotransmitters.

This new study diverges from past research by focusing on the real-world impacts of physical activity, demonstrating that the cognitive benefits may last longer than previously thought. Researchers tracked 76 adults aged between 50 and 83 who were free from cognitive impairments or dementia. Over eight days, participants wore accelerometers to monitor their physical activity and sleep while also completing daily online cognitive tests.
The findings, published in the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, indicated that every additional 30 minutes of physical activity from the previous day was linked to a 2-5% increase in memory scores. Notably, the positive effects on working memory remained significant even after accounting for sleep quality.
Conversely, increased sedentary behavior was associated with a slight decline in working memory scores. However, participants who slept at least six hours each night scored higher in tests of episodic memory, attention, and physical response speed the following day.
Although the study highlighted some limitations such as the high levels of education, excellent health, and active lifestyles of participants, the research underscores the potential of regular physical activity to mitigate age-related cognitive decline. Dr. Bloomberg and her team are now looking to explore these effects in individuals with mild cognitive impairments, suggesting that even minor enhancements in daily cognitive function could substantially improve quality of life.
