In a recent development that promises to transform agricultural practices, Denmark-based startup NitroVolt has introduced an innovative system that produces ammonia using only electricity and air. This technology offers a sustainable alternative to the conventional Haber-Bosch process, which relies heavily on natural gas and has been the standard for over a century.

The system, which was recently showcased to Koppert Cress in the Netherlands, not only secured an agreement for testing but also attracted investment from Division Q, Koppert Cress’s investment arm. According to Suzanne Zamany Andersen, the founder of NitroVolt, their device will provide Koppert Cress with the ammonia needed to nurture a variety of cress while utilizing the generated heat to warm their greenhouses.
Ammonia is a critical component of nitrogen-based fertilizers used widely in agriculture. Traditional production methods contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, posing a challenge for farms aiming to reduce their environmental footprint. NitroVolt’s process, which involves splitting water to extract hydrogen and capturing nitrogen from the air, then combines these elements in a reaction chamber to produce ammonia, offering a greener solution.
This technology is particularly beneficial for remote areas where ammonia is difficult to obtain. For instance, a farmer in Denmark, where no domestic ammonia production exists, previously had to travel to Poland to source this essential fertilizer. With NitroVolt’s system, he anticipates producing ammonia on-site, significantly cutting down logistics and costs.
The pilot unit of NitroVolt is expected to produce about 5 kilograms of ammonia per day, with plans to increase this capacity to 150 kilograms daily—sufficient to Support typical farms in Denmark and the U.S. The system is designed to fit inside a standard 20-foot shipping container, making it easily deployable.
Supported by a €2.75 million seed funding round from various backers, including the Danish sovereign wealth fund, NitroVolt is poised to scale up production. The system’s compatibility with renewable energy sources further enhances its appeal, allowing farmers using solar or wind power to produce cost-effective ammonia sustainably.
As the agricultural sector continues to embrace renewable solutions, NitroVolt stands at the forefront of this shift, demonstrating the viability of electrically produced ammonia in modern farming.
