In a drastic response to escalating air Pollution, New Delhi has initiated severe restrictions, including the closure of schools, a halt on construction activities, and a ban on non-essential truck entry into the city. This season’s air quality in India’s capital has plummeted to its most perilous levels, with pollution concentrations exceeding 50 times the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limits.

The severe air quality crisis in New Delhi, a city of approximately 33 million people, is visible through a dense veil of toxic smog that has significantly reduced visibility, affecting daily activities and even disrupting airline schedules. According to SAFAR, India’s main environmental monitoring agency, the levels of particulate matter—fine particles detrimental to human health—are alarmingly high, posing severe risks to residents.

The primary causes of the annual deterioration in air quality include agricultural practices such as crop residue burning by farmers, particularly prevalent during the cooler months. This practice, combined with stagnant winter air, causes smoke to accumulate and persist in the atmosphere. Urban Pollution from vehicles and industrial emissions compounds the issue, creating a toxic mix that is difficult to dissipate.

In an attempt to mitigate the immediate health hazards, the local government has enacted stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP 4). This includes transitioning to online classes for most students, restricting older diesel vehicles from city roads, and enforcing a strict ban on construction projects. Authorities are also advising vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions to remain indoors.

Despite these measures, the public outcry continues to grow as the health implications become more apparent. Residents have taken to social media to express their frustration and concern, describing the capital as an “apocalyptic” gas chamber. This has reignited debates over the effectiveness of short-term countermeasures and the urgent need for sustainable solutions to combat the root causes of such severe Pollution in northern India.
