On December 2, Jaden Smith shared with the city of  Flint that 501CThree, his nonprofit, had donated a fourth Water Box. The Water box is a portable filtration system designed by the non-profit. According to MLive, the Water Box was given to the Latinx Center, as their donations for water distribution were dwindling.

Smith and business partner Drew Fitzgerald visited the center to make the announcement. The Water Box is designed to filter out contaminants from tap water. This system benefits the center in two ways, it removes plastic water bottles as a distribution option, and it filters out water.

Asa Zuccaro, the center’s executive director said of the donation, “This is a health crisis but in providing bottled water we are creating an environmental crisis. All this plastic waste, we knew it wasn’t a solution and we knew something had to be done. Just as we were talking about running out of funds for our water distribution, the team from 501CThree reached out and offered to give us a Water Box.”

The Latinx Center will be trained how to use and test the water from the system. Water samples are sent to an outside lab routinely. Previous Water Boxes in Flint have gone to First Trinity Church, the Metropolitan Tabernacle Church, and Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village.

Smith said of the effort, “We’re very interested in providing another box to Flint moving into 2020. We want to keep donating the Water Boxes until the community says ‘OK, we’ve had enough.’ Until we get to that point, we’re going to continue looking for opportunities in Flint or around the world to get another Water Box in this community.”
