The past decade has witnessed an alarming escalation in violence against environmental activists. This trend, starkly highlighted in reports from Global Witness and other organizations, underscores a growing crisis at the intersection of environmental protection and human rights. It reveals the increasing risks faced by those who bravely stand up for the planet.
The statistics are stark: between 2012 and 2022, at least 1,910 environmental activists were killed globally, a horrifying average of one murder every two days. The year 2022 alone saw the murder of 177 environmental activists, illuminating the persistent and escalating nature of this violence. Reports like those from Yale E360 and Global Witness bring these issues to the forefront, shedding light on the global scale and regularity of these attacks.
These numbers, while alarming, likely fall short of the actual figures due to underreporting, particularly in remote and conflict-prone areas. The root causes of this violence are complex and multifaceted, spanning from land inequality to the aggressive pursuit of land and natural resources by governments, corporations, and wealthy entities. The demand for resources has driven a spike in land grabs for mining, logging, agribusiness, and infrastructure projects, often disregarding the rights and well-being of local communities.

Latin America has emerged as the epicenter of danger for environmental defenders, with an overwhelming majority of killings occurring in this region. In particular, Colombia has been the deadliest country for environmental activists, followed by Brazil and Mexico. The situation in Mexico is particularly dire, with a dramatic increase to 54 killings in 2021, the highest reported for any nation, signaling a worrying trend in the region.
The disproportionate impact on Indigenous communities is a grave concern. Representing a mere 5% of the global population, Indigenous peoples bore over 40% of the deadly attacks in 2021. Their role as custodians of crucial ecosystems places them at the forefront of environmental defense, making them targets in countries like Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela. This targeting not only undermines their rights but also poses a significant threat to the preservation of biodiversity and traditional knowledge.
Among the most heartrending cases are the eight rangers murdered in Congo’s Virunga National Park, a battleground for control over resource-rich lands. These rangers were guardians of one of the world’s most precious natural habitats, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. Their sacrifice highlights the extreme dangers faced by those protecting our planet’s irreplaceable treasures.
The international community has responded with various measures, including the ratification of protective agreements like the Escazú Agreement in Colombia. These initiatives are steps in the right direction but fall short of the comprehensive action needed to safeguard environmental activists globally. The continuous efforts of NGOs and advocacy groups in raising awareness and pushing for policy changes remain crucial in this ongoing battle.
The need to protect environmental activists has never been more urgent. As the frontliners in combating climate change and biodiversity loss, their safety is integral to our collective future. We urge our readers to actively Support organizations dedicated to this cause and to advocate for stronger international policies and cooperation. Your engagement can be pivotal in ensuring the security and acknowledgment of those who risk everything for our planet’s well-being.

If you’re an animal activist who exposes criminal cruelty and animal abuse and takes action to rescue the victims, you get treated worse than “environmental” activists.
You’re more likely to go to prison for exposing animal cruelty than for committing it. Support the Right to Rescue!
