In a push towards sustainable construction, Finland-based company Block Solutions is making waves with its Lego-like building blocks made from plastic waste. Established in 2017 by Markus Silfverberg, the company is at the forefront of an eco-friendly revolution, turning the construction industry on its head with its innovative use of recycled materials.

Block Solutions harnesses recycled polypropylene and other plastics, amalgamated with organic fibers such as wood byproducts, to create a unique biocomposite material. These blocks are not only lightweight but also boast a load-bearing strength superior to that of traditional cinder blocks, making them a robust alternative for building.

The simplicity of the construction process is a game-changer, particularly in disaster recovery situations. The blocks interlock easily and can be assembled with minimal tools—just a rubber hammer, a water level, and a ring wrench are needed. Remarkably, two people can construct a 323-square-foot structure in just two and a half hours. This rapid assembly capability proved invaluable during the 2018 earthquake recovery efforts in Lombok, Indonesia, where Block Solutions, in partnership with Classroom of Hope, built a five-room school in only six days.

This project not only facilitated immediate educational needs but also addressed environmental concerns by recycling tons of plastic waste. Such initiatives underscore the dual benefits of using these innovative blocks, combining disaster relief with environmental stewardship.

The environmental impact of utilizing these blocks extends beyond waste reduction. The majority of plastic waste ends up in landfills, contributing significantly to Pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. By repurposing this waste into building materials, Block Solutions is tackling the housing shortage crisis while simultaneously combating the environmental crisis.

As Block Solutions plans to expand its operations globally, with potential factories in Asia and the U.S., the demand for these eco-friendly blocks is expected to soar. The company is also exploring the use of other sustainable materials like bamboo and rice husks to further enhance the environmental credentials of their products. With claims of the carbon impact of their blocks being “close to zero,” Block Solutions continues to pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future in construction.
