In the vibrant community of Tierra Bomba, Colombia, a unique initiative combines the joy of surfing with critical environmental action. The Amigos del Mar foundation, based on this Caribbean island, has been pivotal in transforming the local attitude towards plastic waste. Every week, children from the island gather for surfing lessons where participation hinges not just on their surfing enthusiasm but also on their educational attendance, including lessons about the environment.

This island, despite its proximity to the bustling cityscape of Cartagena, struggles with basic services like clean water and waste management. The plastic debris that accumulates on its beaches prompted Amigos del Mar to initiate the Olas Paz program—known as the Clean Wave Project in English. The innovative project converts collected plastic bottle caps into surfboard fins. Last year alone, the foundation gathered over 7,000 bottle caps through beach cleaning initiatives and community involvement.
Each surfboard fin is crafted using approximately 18 recycled bottle caps. This practical application of recycled plastic not only helps clean up the beaches but also provides a tangible example of recycling benefits to the community, many of whom had never engaged in such practices before.
Pedro Salazar, the founder of Amigos del Mar, highlights the dual benefits of the program. “The waste on the ground has value, and that incentive allowed a positive change in the community,” he says. This initiative also serves to keep the youth engaged in positive activities, steering them away from less desirable paths.
However, the success of the Olas Paz project led to unexpected challenges due to the sheer volume of plastic collected. The project has temporarily stalled as it grapples with managing the influx of plastic caps. Despite this, the community continues to Support the initiative, hopeful for its resurgence.
Tierra Bomba’s story is a testament to how local action can combat the pervasive issue of plastic Pollution, exacerbated by mass tourism and inadequate infrastructure. As the local government and environmental advisors push for broader recycling measures and bans on single-use plastics, the residents of Tierra Bomba stand as a beacon of grassroots environmental stewardship.
