So many brave people have chosen to stay behind in the crossfires of the Ukraine invasion to help save countless animals. Among them is Veterinarian Vladyslav Matviichuk, who is risking his life to care for the suffering animals in Kyiv.

Dr. Matviichuk and his wife, Iryna, had to evacuate their home with their two cats when explosions were going off outside of their flat. However, he would not let this or supply shortages stop him from caring for animals. He now works on animals from his parents’ kitchen. The couple has reportedly been so low on supplies, they have to use cut-up bedsheets as makeshift bandages for the animals.

Thankfully, In Defense of Animals, an animal protection organization, raised funds for Dr. Matviichuk to continue his Support and care of these helpless animals.
“Many animals suffer from explosions, missiles, and tanks. Many animals became homeless. Veterinary clinics are destroyed or closed. It is a very big problem to buy food and medicine for animals today,” Matviichuk told In Defense of Animals. “I try to help everyone. I treat and operate at home, take calls, consult online, by phone, by video, if it is not possible to help animals offline. Unfortunately, my resources are currently running out.”

In Defense of Animals is continuing to raise money to help Ukrainians who are risking their lives to help animals. If you are able to Donate, you can Donate to the organization here.
“Brave Ukrainian people who are suffering tremendously right now are showing the world how important animals are to them, and that they are also a huge and important part of this humanitarian crisis. We’re grateful to our supporters whose generosity is enabling us to offer aid at such an important time and hope Dr. Matviichuk’s story inspires more people to continue to give,” said Fleur Dawes, Communications Director for In Defense of Animals.
