A new study shows that cats might be just as affectionate as dogs and might be as closely bonded to their owners, despite the commonly held beliefs that say otherwise.
The researchers examined 70 kittens and 38 adult cats when separated from their owners. The test involved leaving the cats with their owners for two minutes, separating them for two minutes, and then allowing them to see one another again. The study showed that pet cats had very similar attachment styles towards their caregivers that are more recognized in dogs.
65% of the cats showed distinct signs of distress after their owners left the room, and showed a reduced stress response once their owners were in sight again. 35% of the cats showed an insecure style of attachment, staying stressed even when being reunited with their owners. This style of secure and insecure attachments is very similar to how children react.
This research shows that cats are very much capable of becoming attached to their owners, a fact that all cat owners have already known for a long time.
It is a common belief that cats do not get very attached or affectionate with their owners. But that just isn’t true. Many cats are just more reserved than dogs are, but they are still capable of having the same emotions.
