Pigs are highly intelligent and emotionally complex animals who are often said to have a mental capacity comparable to that of a three-year-old human. They express emotions of fear, compassion, joy, and sadness, but due to industrialized animal agriculture, pigs have been reduced to a mere meat source rather than being recognized for being the smart, sweet, and fascinating creatures they are.
In the video above shared on Facebook by Dutch non-profit Hobbyvarkenvereniging, we see a heartbreaking scene of a pig mourning the loss of a close friend. The two pigs lived together for 13 long years, and when one of them passed away, the other grieved for an extended time, solemnly resting his face on the body of his friend.
This video is a touching example of how advanced pigs’ cognitive and emotional capabilities are. If you are as moved by this video as we are, make sure to share it with your friends and family as a reminder that animals, even those widely considered to be a food source, are someones, not somethings.
