While many people love their animals and treat them like family, there are still many horrible people out there that treat animals without any regard for their lives. Luckily, there are laws in most states that protect animals from harm and groups that work to strengthen these laws.
Each year the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) publishes the U.S. State Animal Protection Laws Rankings Report, which assesses the animal protection laws in each state and ranks them based on 19 different categories. This year the top five worst states for animals include Wyoming, Kentucky, New Mexico, and Iowa. The worst state for animals was identified as Mississipi.
The only felony laws for first-time animal abusers are for dogfighting as well as for those who hurt or kill livestock. The livestock laws, however, usually are out of concern for farmers rather than the animals themselves. According to ALDF, “Mississippi’s general animal cruelty laws are meager and ill-defined, with all crimes — even torture — capped as a misdemeanor.” Furthermore, there are the standards for animals’ basic care are poorly defined, veterinarians and animal professionals do not have to report suspected abuse, there is “no mandatory forfeiture of animals upon conviction and permissive forfeiture only available for select animals and sexual assault statute (is) poorly defined.” Animals deserve more protection from abusers. Sign this petition to encourage Mississippi to move forward by making animal abandonment and neglect a felony.
