While in some parts of the world we are getting snow and wearing coats and jackets, it’s summertime in Australia. The heat brings with it many issues like the intensity of the fires that are currently devastating the country. During this time of the year, everyone including animals is at risk of overheating. Yet, farm animals are often not protected by shade and suffer tremendously in the burning heat.
Queensland advocates Morika Elek and Linda Aldridge launched a campaign called Animals Need Shade “calling for stronger legal protection and enforceability regarding the provision of adequate shade and shelter for farm animals.”
The lack of shade is an animal welfare crisis. Farm animals already suffer for many other reasons such as being condemned to a life in captivity that results in slaughter at a young age for the sale of meat and dairy. Ideally, animals would not be in these situations at all and seen as commodities who just end up as food — they’d be free! But liberation for animals is still quite a long way off, so the least we can do is demand better conditions and welfare for the animals who have still not been rescued from farms.
On top of all this, we are in the midst of a climate crisis. Hot temperatures are more severe than ever and the deadly fires in Australia killing koalas and other animals are proof.
Sign this petition to demand that farms be required to provide shade and shelter for farm animals in the summer.
