On May 8, 2021, a kangaroo named Willow escaped from Papanack Park Zoo in Ottawa. The poor kangaroo was seen bloody, with multiple injuries and exposed bone, on the road. Although people tried to help, she died that day. In their now-deleted post about the death, the zoo did not specify whether she died from her injuries or euthanization.
Sadly, this wasn’t a one-time mistake. In 2016, a lion named Zeus was shot and killed after escaping from the zoo. Furthermore, while zoos are inherently exploitative and harmful because profit is prioritized over the animals, there has been horrible cruelty documented at Papanack Park Zoo in undercover footage. Animals were shown being roughly handled, beat, kept in terrible conditions, engaging in behaviors that are indicative of psychological distress, and stealing baby animals from their mothers.

Bruce Roney, President and CEO of the Ottawa Humane Society, released a statement, condemning the “horrendous animal cruelty and neglect” and urging officials to ensure that the “gross exploitation of animals in Ontario” is put to an end.
While an investigation was opened into the zoo in 2018, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was unable to continue because they did not have witness cooperation. If you witness any animal neglect or abuse in Ontario, especially at this zoo, please call 1-833-9-ANIMAL to report it.
