Did you know that America’s most decorated war dog was believed to be a pit bull mix? Sgt. Stubby was a stray dog who was rescued by a soldier, and part of his legacy is his wonderful temperament. He was also an emotional Support dog in some ways — after being hit by a grenade, he kept the other soldiers company while he recovered. Yet, pit bulls have been an assigned an unfair reputation. They are not inherently aggressive. There is a possibility of any dog, of any breed being aggressive.
Despite Sgt. Stubby’s wonderful legacy and the many ways that dogs help militaries, the U.S. military has a discriminatory housing law. A dog like Sgt. Stubby would today be turned away from military housing on a U.S. base because he would be considered “dangerous.”
Breed bans are unfair and discriminatory. A breed does not make a dog dangerous. The American Veterinary Medical Association is against breed-specific legislation, stating that it does nothing to address irresponsible pet ownership, and it’s unfair to responsible dog owners and their dogs. It’s also proven that such laws don’t prevent dog bites. That’s not how it works. People with pets have to be more responsible — not in that their dogs should never bite, but they can take precautions if they know that their dog does bite or has aggression problems.
As petitioner Laura G. states in her Care2 petition: “Members of the military who are bravely serving our country shouldn’t have to make the terrible decision of either giving up their beloved dogs or moving to off-base.”
If you agree, sign this petition urging the Residential Communities Initiative to drop its unfair breed ban.
