A toy fox terrier named Dutchess that was disappeared from her Florida home in 2007 has been found over 1,000 miles away in Pittsburgh. The 14-year-old dog was found hungry and shivering. The person who found the dog brought her to a nearby Humane Animal Rescue location where they traced her back to her owner, Katheryn Strang, using her microchip.
Strang and her family assumed the worst, thinking that their beloved dog was killed on the busy streets of Orlando where they lived at the time. Strang made sure to keep her contact information up to date with Dutchess’s microchip, never giving up hope that she would someday be found. “They’re like your babies,” she said.
When they got the call, they could hardly believe that not only had she been found after being lost for more than ten years, but she was found more than 1,000 miles from home.
This story is a great example of why microchipping pets is so important. Microchipping is one of many ways you can keep your non-human companions safe and prepared for the worst. According to AKC Reunite, a service that aids in locating lost pets, pets with microchips are 20 times more likely to be found. The American Animal Hospital Association also has a universal lookup tool to help located microchipped pets.
Pets are part of our families and it’s always devastating to lose them. Microchipping your pet not only gives you peace of mind, but can help reduce the number of stray animals on the streets. With so many animals already in need of homes, this small step is essential for pet owners to make sure their companions don’t become one of them.
