It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week.
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Free Lyka the Blind Lioness Kept in a Rusty Cage
Lyka is a young blind lioness who is kept in a rusty cage at the Maasin Zoo in the Philippines. She just lies there, depressed and bored. She also isn’t adequately fed. Visitors, along with photos and videos, prove that she is not healthy and not doing well despite the zoo’s claims that she is fine. Zoo staff was even heard calling her a “breeding mistake.” Other animals at the zoo are also not doing well with poor conditions and terrible enclosures. Sign this petition to call on the Governor of Iloilo to immediately close the Maasin Zoo and free Lyka to a sanctuary.
2. Defend Starving Polar Bears – Save the Arctic Refuge
Climate change is already devastating the sea ice habitat that polar bears rely upon, and drilling in the Arctic Refuge will only make our climate crisis worse. Polar bears are starving. To defend polar bears like the one seen in the tragic viral video, we need to immediately move away from dirty energy sources and embrace a clean energy future. Trump just announced his finalized plan to open the pristine, long-protected Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling and gas exploration. Sign this petition to demand that Congress protect the arctic and polar bears!
3. Trump Wants To Frack California’s Public Lands
The Trump Administration to open up more than a million acres in California to oil drilling and hydraulic fracturing or fracking, including areas close to Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. There are so many known health and environmental risks associated with this process: the contamination of drinking water, the evaporation of toxic chemicals, the possibility of earthquakes. Sign this petition if you want this proposal to be halted.
4. Save Endangered Dolphins, Whales, and Sharks From Becoming Dinner Meat!
Footage taken at the Tanjung Luar Fish Market in eastern Lombok, Indonesia revealed people carrying the bodies of endangered marine animals and selling them for their meat. There were dolphins, whales, and sharks being sold. Sign this petition to demand that the Indonesian government protect these precious endangered species now and shut down the Tanjung Luar Fish Market, before even more dolphins and whales are senselessly slaughtered!
5. Demand Justice for Horses Starved to Death
At the army unit in South Africa, 169 horses were starving and living in terrible conditions. The horses had no food, and had nothing to eat except soil and their own faeces. Food was only provided to the horses after the NSPCA forced the army unit into taking emergency action to secure adequate feed for the animals. Twenty-five horses died. Sign the petition to demand the people responsible for this crime are brought to justice.
6. Tell the American Kennel Club to Stop Promoting Ear Cropping and Tail Docking!
The American Kennel Club has certain “breed standards” that dictate how each breed should look if it’s pure bred. This includes unnecessary, painful surgeries like ear cropping, tail docking, and declaw removal. If the ACK were to just change their standards, horrific practices like tail docking and ear cropping would decline. Sign this petition to ask the AKC to reconsider these breed standards.
7. Stop Teaching Children to Trophy-Hunt Helpless Animals and Show Off in Photos
Many companies offer cruel packages in which tourists can pay a lot of money to hunt innocent, vulnerable animals. But the Africa Hunt Lodge in South Africa even arranges these hunts for children. Their website takes pride in teaching children to kill. Kids should be taught to respect wildlife, and murder is never a sign of respect. Sign this petition if you want this perverse tradition to end!
8. Demand Justice for Seals Who Were Murdered and Decapitated!
A woman in Northern Ireland was jogging along the beach when she found three dead seals whose heads were missing. The woman, Niamh Fox says that what she saw “looked like the decapitation must be the result of human cruelty — it was too specific, intentional, and senseless. No other animal would have reason to do something like that to a fellow creature.” Sign this petition to call on Irish authorities to investigate this terrible crime and bring those responsible to justice!
9. Tell the US to Stop Sending American Working Dogs to Countries Where They Die in Horrible Conditions
Over the past eight years, ten of the bomb-sniffing dogs sent to Jordan from America died. They were being neglected. One died from heatstroke, one developed a deadly tick-borne disease, and others were emaciated, parasite ridden, and lacking proper medical attention. The U.S. knew this information after a whistleblower informed them and there was an investigation, yet they continued to send dogs. Sign the petition and demand that the U.S. State Department stop giving dogs to countries that can’t take care of them.
10. Support Bijou’s Law – License Pet Groomers and Help Save Other Pets
Right now, in the grooming industry, there aren’t many rules or regulations. Many dogs, including the happy and healthy 6-year-old shih tzu named Bijou, have died during grooming sessions. New Jersey introduced Bijou’s Law – Pet Grooming Licensing Act, which will require groomers to be licensed. Sign this petition if you support this law.
