Unfortunately, it’s not unheard of for breeders, hoarders, or pet stores to pretend to be rescue organizations. About a year ago, a pet store in Iowa was busted for pretending to be a non-profit organization rescuing dogs when they were actually selling “purebred” and “designer” dogs that came from breeding mills. Recently, another animal “shelter” was busted, not for selling animals, but for severe cases of animal cruelty and neglect.
Just this past weekend, police raided The Trixie Foundation shelter in Kentucky. What they found there was horrific. They seized 90 dogs, some of which had to be tranquilized. Many of the dogs will likely have to be euthanized because they are visibly and clearly suffering from illnesses like mouth tumors, eye infections, and more.
The most horrifying thing they found however, were dead dogs and cats in the freezers — seven cats and five dogs. A respectable organization that truly cares about animals would never even think to “dispose” of animals in this way. The owner was cited with 12 counts of improperly disposing dead animals.
The animal cruelty at this “shelter” was already well known in the area. The owner was already set to face trial this summer for animal cruelty charges in 2018. There is a Facebook page run by a local called STOP The Trixie Foundation aka The Gulag aiming to put a stop to this cruel shelter.
The dogs rescued from the raid are now in the care of TLC Rescue, founded by Julia Sharp. Locals and animal activists are hoping that Randy Skaggs, owner of The Trixie Foundation, gets the appropriate sentence for his crimes and that stronger laws come of this.
To stop places like this from existing at the root of the issue, sign this petition calling for an end to breeding mills.
