It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including banning the sale of products tested on animals, shutting down illegal wildlife markets, and banning ownership of elephants.
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Ban Trophy Hunting in and Around Hwange National Park Where Cecil Was Killed
In 2015, Walter Palmer lured 12-year-old Cecil to his death in a conservatory next to Hwange park where lions are studied. The hunters tried to hide what they’d done by removing the collar scientists used to study Cecil. The whole thing was criminal and disgusting and we must be better than this. There are more ways in which Palmer acted terribly and the Zimbabwe government looked the other way. Sign this petition to tell the Zimbabwe government that it’s unacceptable that this happened and went completely unpunished and now we demand no trophy hunting in the area.
2. Shut Down Illegal Wildlife Markets Like the One that Started Coronavirus Outbreak
Warning: photo below contains graphic content that may be distressing to some viewers.
The deadly coronavirus is spreading quickly. Over 200 people have died, and over 10,000 cases have been diagnosed in China alone. Even worse, there is currently no cure. The World Health Organization (WHO) believes the disease was spread by bats, badgers, snakes, or rats. For health and conservation reasons, these markets must be banned altogether. Sign this petition to demand that China shut down illegal wildlife markets permanently!
3. Ban Ownership of Captive Elephants in Sri Lanka and Send Abused Elephant to Sanctuary
Footage was released of an elephant named Myan Prince, lying down being beaten by his owner at a Buddhist Temple near Colombo, Sri Lanka. Myan Prince is one of an estimated 250 captive elephants in Sri Lanka. In total, there are about 4,000 and they’re extremely endangered. Sign this petition to tell Sri Lanka to ban the ownership of captive elephants and to release Myan Prince to the safety of a sanctuary!
4. Protect African Lions from Trophy Hunters
Source: Stop Murdering Lions!
According to Scientific American, the African lion population has dropped 42 percent in the last 21 years. On the IUCN red list, African lions are listed as vulnerable because their populations are decreasing. And they will unfortunately continue to decrease if people continue being allowed to kill them for fun or “trophies.” Panthera estimates that there are only 20,000 individuals left. They also report that the animal has disappeared from 26 African nations. Sign this petition to support a motion to protect lions from trophy hunting all across the continent!
5. Justice for Dogs, Horses, Cow and Goat Sexually Assaulted on Video by Three Men
Three Pennsylvania men are being investigated for over 1,400 counts of sexually assaulting dogs, cows, horses and goats. But in Pennsylvania, bestiality is only a misdemeanor, which means that these three men will only face minor charges for their horrific crime. Sign this petition asking Pennsylvania to change this so that cruel people like these three men can’t get away with this!
6. End the Killing of Mountain Lions in South Dakota
Source: Stop Murdering Mountain Lions
Trophy hunters in South Dakota are being allowed to kill up to 60 mountain lions — that’s 30 percent of the population! On top of already allowing this many mountain lions to be hunted, the hunting seasons were also extended through April and there will be an increase in permits for hunters to use their hounds to hunt mountain lions at Custer State Park. Using hounds is an incredibly cruel way to terrify and kill the animals. Dogs with GPS collars chase and corner a lion until the hunter arrives and shoots the animal at close range. Sign this petition to urge the Fish and Parks Agency to stop issuing permits to the hunters that murder these precious mountain lions!
7. End the Seahorse Trade!
Millions of seahorses are captured from the wild and murdered for humane use (like traditional medicine and decoration). Many seahorse species are threatened and endangered. Their capture and murder should not be allowed. Many species are even protected by CITES, but the trade continues. Sign this petition calling for an end to the seahorse trade.
8. Save Rare Clouded Leopards From Extinction
There are only about 10,000 rare clouded leopards left. They are being massacred for “medicine,” habitat destruction, and the fashion industry. According to EIA International, “In 2018, a publicly reported transaction involved the sale of 1.23 tonnes of leopard bone, representing approximately 150 leopards.” Their habitat is also being destroyed and threatened by logging and wood collectors. Sign this petition to ask the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Committee on Environment to create anti-poaching efforts to save the rare clouded leopard.
9. Ban the Sale of Products Tested on Animals
California, Nevada, and Illinois officially banned the sale of beauty products tested on animals. Now it’s time for the whole USA to ban the sale of products tested on animals, and force companies that want to do business in America to ensure that their products are cruelty free. Sign this petition if you want every other state to follow suit and want legislation banning the sale of products tested on animals nationwide!
10. Stop the Export of American Greyhounds to China
Watchdogs have discovered that hounds from Iowa are also making their way to China, to be raced, bred and face a whole host of cruelties. When news of the dog exports made headlines in Des Moines, it prompted both Iowa’s Greyhound Association and the National Greyhound Association to change their export rules, banning the sale or expert of any registered canine to a country without accepted animal welfare standards. Sign this petition to ask the U.S. government to completely ban the export of racing dogs.
