In parts of Asia, bear bile is revered for its powerful medicinal properties. Used for everything from toothpaste to shampoo and pain killers, bear bile is a highly sought after commodity. Unfortunately, as the name implies, in order to get this product, you need bears.

Sun bears and Moon bears are the most common victims of the bear bile trade. As you can see in the video above, life on bile farms is nothing short of horrific. These bears spend their entire lives in tiny “crush” cages so that their gallbladder fluid can be drained on a daily basis. This is an incredibly painful experience for bears and most develop very serious health problems as a result. Not to mention, the frustration that comes with living in a small cage that prevents any movement, causes many of the bears to suffer from deep mental and emotional distress.

Thankfully, Animals Asia, an organization that is dedicated to rescuing these bear, is working to raise awareness for this cruel practice and put an end to it for good.

In the video above, you can see how this organization has changed life for these animals first-hand. Seeing these bears finally get the chance to experience life outside of a cage is sure to make you smile!
