Studies show that music has the ability to alter the physiology, cognition, and brain chemistry of humans. More studies show that it does the same for animals. That’s why Edgar’s Mission had the brilliant idea to begin Musical Mondays. Edgar’s Mission is a non-profit farm sanctuary in Australia that rescues and provides sanctuary to animals in need, currently caring for over 450 rescued animals.
Every Monday, volunteer Vimukti Warr arrives at Edgar’s Mission to play the harp as a form of musical therapy for the animals. It’s proven to be absolutely magical. In the video above, Warr can be seen playing for an orphaned calf named Leonard Cohen who was a new arrival at the time and stayed close to her side the entire time she played.
Other animals that have benefitted from the musical therapy include Big Horn and Big Chief Little Horn who were recently rescued from near death during a cold snap in Australia.
Warr has also played the harp for the rescued animals over at Chicken Village, where a rescue named Thunderbolt was “particularly captivated,” as the sanctuary stated in their video post.
Edgar’s Mission explains that Warr changes the tone and tempo when playing for the animals to see which they prefer and what resonates with them most. The sanctuary has noticed that some animals relax during the music playing and some shy animals seem to come out of their shells while she’s there.
What a wonderful way to help animals who have been through so much feel some peace and calm. Music is just another beautiful thing that can help us bond and connect with animals. As the motto of Edgar’s Mission states, “If we could live happy and healthy lives without harming others… why wouldn’t we?” We hope their Musical Mondays inspire others to volunteer at sanctuaries or at least see these animals differently and become more compassionate and kind to all.
