USDA Issues Warning to Sloth Encounters Over Animal Welfare Violations

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued an official warning to Larry Wallach, owner of the controversial Sloth Encounters, following an undercover investigation by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The investigation revealed disturbing treatment of sloths at Wallach’s facility in Hauppauge, New York, where staff were documented hitting and grabbing the animals. This official warning, released on May 9, 2024, signifies a serious escalation in enforcement by the USDA, which is responsible for upholding the federal Animal Welfare Act.

The USDA’s warning references citations issued to Wallach earlier this year, on January 30, 2024, in response to a complaint from the HSUS and the Humane Society Legislative Fund. These citations were prompted by evidence gathered during the HSUS’s investigation, which highlighted severe violations of animal welfare laws.

In the wake of the investigation, the Town of Islip, New York, compelled Sloth Encounters to close its storefront. The current location of Wallach’s sloths and other animals remains unknown. Despite these significant infractions, including the improper housing of sloths in a hazardous garage, Wallach still holds a USDA license and continues to offer sloth-handling experiences in private homes.

Laura Hagen, director of captive wildlife at the HSUS, expressed her concerns following the USDA’s warning. “Career animal exploiter Larry Wallach was recently hit with an official warning from the USDA resulting from our undercover investigation at his Sloth Encounters business, including shocking footage of animals being physically abused by staff during public handling. While we appreciate this step from the USDA, it’s simply not enough. We remain concerned about the welfare of Wallach’s animals, including sloths that he continues to peddle for profit in encounters at people’s homes. This is why we need the public to urge their elected officials to Support the Better CARE for Animals Act which would give the Department of Justice tools to help enforce the Animal Welfare Act to end this kind of cruelty before it is too late.”

Hagen’s statement underscores the need for stronger legal measures to protect animals from exploitation and abuse. The HSUS continues to advocate for the Better CARE for Animals Act, legislation aimed at enhancing the enforcement capabilities of the Animal Welfare Act.
