Series of Wild Jaguar Sightings is Promising

A thrilling sighting of a young, male jaguar has brought promise for the entire species. But, the border wall could stop this progress. Emily Burns, program director at the Sky Island Alliance Conservation group in Arizona, recalls the encounter as “a moment of euphoria,” marking the rare presence of a jaguar in the region.

Jaguars, once native to the American southwest, were hunted to local extinction by the 1960s. However, in the 1990s, they began sporadically reappearing in the Sky Islands mountain ranges of New Mexico and Arizona. Recent sightings mark their tentative return, offering hope for their Conservation. Yet, hurdles loom large. Climate extremes, habitat loss, and the impact of the Trump administration’s border wall pose significant threats. The construction of the wall has severed wildlife corridors, fragmenting ecosystems crucial for the jaguar’s survival.

In November 2023, Sky Island Alliance captured an image of a large jaguar in the remote Whetstone mountains of southern Arizona, marking the fifth recorded sighting in the US that year. In December, the same jaguar was spotted in the Huachuca mountains, possibly making its way towards Mexico. These mountains, part of the Sky Islands, provide a haven for biodiversity, including jaguars.

The importance of these habitats goes beyond the jaguar. Louise Misztal, executive director at Sky Island Alliance, emphasizes the significance of protecting corridors for jaguars to move between the US and Mexico. However, the border wall jeopardizes this freedom of movement. Its construction disrupts migration routes and access to vital resources like water and prey. Additionally, the impact on jaguars’ energy expenditure is profound. With the barrier in place, they must travel greater distances to find water and sustenance.
