Passengers at LaGuardia Airport in New York were met with an unexpected visitor early Monday morning: a raccoon crashing through the ceiling and causing a scene at a Spirit Airlines gate. The animal’s sudden appearance sent waves of surprise and confusion through the small Marine Air Terminal as travelers and staff scrambled to respond.
A video posted on social media captured the amusing yet chaotic moment. The raccoon was seen dangling from ceiling wires before making its way behind a check-in desk, setting off a flurry of activity. In the background, audio recordings revealed a medley of frantic screams, barking dogs, and blaring alarms.
The incident unfolded at the airport’s Terminal A, a small area known for serving budget airlines Spirit and Frontier. Although LaGuardia has undergone extensive renovations over the past decade, this terminal was not included in the updates. The Marine Air Terminal’s aging infrastructure has long been a source of criticism, even drawing a rebuke from Joe Biden in 2014, who likened the airport to “a third-world country.”
Port Authority officials are now investigating how the raccoon gained access to the terminal, and Spirit Airlines confirmed the involvement of a professional wildlife control company to prevent similar episodes in the future. Fortunately, no one was harmed, and the raccoon managed to evade capture.
