Puerto Rico has officially recognized October 2, 2024, as World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA). The proclamation encourages residents to embrace a diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, offering a wholesome, nonviolent approach to eating.

“Following Baltimore, Maryland, and the State of Louisiana, we’re honored that Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi has proclaimed October 2, 2024, World Day for Farmed Animals to his population of more than 3 million,” said Eric C. Lindstrom, Executive Director of Farm Animal rights Movement (FARM). He emphasized that the proclamation highlights both the health benefits for Puerto Rican citizens and the importance of animal welfare.

Puerto Rico, home to 3.2 million people, has seen significant growth in its plant-based food scene. Many restaurants now offer vegan options, and dedicated vegan establishments are on the rise. This shift reflects a broader trend toward more sustainable and compassionate food choices in the territory.

As the 41st annual WDFA approaches, it is important to reflect on the ongoing challenges faced by farmed animals. Most animals are raised in harsh conditions on factory farms, subjected to overcrowding, mutilation, and denial of natural behaviors. Public sentiment has increasingly turned against such practices, with surveys showing that 93% of people disapprove of animal mistreatment. In response, some states have enacted laws aimed at protecting sick and injured animals.

The effects of factory farming are more than animal welfare. The overuse of antibiotics in these environments poses a risk to public health by contributing to the rise of drug-resistant diseases. Additionally, meat processing facilities have been linked to the spread of deadly viruses, including COVID-19, putting both workers and surrounding communities at risk.

Environmental concerns also loom large as waste from factory farms continues to contaminate water sources worldwide. Despite water shortages, 80% of global water resources are used for animal farming, further straining the planet’s ecosystems. The United Nations has identified animal farming as a key driver of Climate change, adding urgency to calls for reform.

On October 2nd, which marks the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, a leading advocate of nonviolence and sustainable farming, WDFA encourages individuals to reflect on these issues. The day serves as a reminder to explore healthier, cruelty-free dietary choices.
