Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has officially recognized October 2, 2024, as World Day for Farmed Animals (WDFA), joining the City of Baltimore, Maryland, in proclaiming this day. The WDFA, established in 1983, is dedicated to raising awareness about the welfare of farmed animals and promoting a diet that excludes animal products. This day encourages people to consider more compassionate and sustainable food choices, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Louisiana, home to over 4.6 million residents, has a strong record in animal protection, ranking among the top 10 states according to the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s U.S. State Animal Protection Laws Ranking Report. Eric C. Lindstrom, Executive Director of the Farm Animal rights Movement (FARM), expressed gratitude to Governor Landry, noting that the proclamation reflects a commitment to both human health and animal welfare. The proclamation also underscores the broader environmental and public health issues linked to factory farming, including antibiotic resistance, water Pollution, and Climate change.
