In Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, a 13-year-old Great Pyrenees named Sadie has found her forever home after a difficult start in life. Sadie was one of 14 Great Pyrenees and two collies rescued in poor condition, suffering from severe skin infections and almost hairless coats.
The rescue was led by the Pennsylvania SPCA Animal Law Enforcement, and the dogs were hospitalized for weeks before being cleared for adoption. Kimberly Cary, social media coordinator at the Main Line Animal Shelter (MLAR), described Sadie’s transformation saying she “has blossomed in our care.”
Sadie arrived at MLAR in late May and was the first to be adopted. Her new family was specifically looking for a senior dog and fell in love with Sadie at first sight.
The story of Sadie’s adoption is especially poignant given the challenges senior dogs face in finding homes. Older pets often struggle to compete with younger animals for adoption. In 2023, approximately 850,000 animals were euthanized in shelters, a 15% increase from the previous year. Shelters are working hard to reduce these numbers through adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavior rehabilitation.
