Nationwide announced that the rising cost of veterinary care has compelled it to withdraw its pet insurance services in certain states. Approximately 100,000 policies will not be renewed between now and the summer of 2025. Policyholders affected by this change will be notified, but Nationwide has assured them that existing protections will remain in place until the end of their current terms.
Importantly, Nationwide clarified that factors such as the age, breed, and prior claims history of the pets will not influence which policyholders are affected by the coverage withdrawal.
In a statement, Nationwide expressed pride in its history of reliably covering claims. “We are proud that we consistently pay for covered claims each and every day, amounting to billions of dollars over the past four decades,” the company stated. “We are making these tough decisions now so that we can continue to be here for even more pets in the future.”
Known for its insurance coverage for exotic animals in addition to cats and dogs, Nationwide Pet has some of the highest premiums in the market, according to U.S. News and World Report. With the majority of Americans considering their pets as family members, according to the Pew Research Center, the financial burden of pet care is becoming a significant issue. Many pet owners rely on insurance policies to mitigate unexpected healthcare costs, with most plans offering reimbursement for covered incidents.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a continuous rise in the cost of urban veterinary services, driven by inflation and a national shortage of veterinarians. Mars Veterinary Health, a large network of veterinary clinics, has indicated that up to 55,000 additional veterinarians will be needed by 2030 to meet the growing demand for companion animal healthcare in the U.S.
