Although animals can suffer from many of the same mental health difficulties as humans, mental health medication for animals remains a controversial topic. While it may be beneficial in some cases, experts worry that it could lead to some animals’ needs not being met. Instead, they worry that humans will choose to administer drugs.
The past 20 years have seen a rising understanding of animal’s mental health. Indeed, their conditions can often mirror mental health problems found in humans. Fish can exhibit depressive behavior, some mice have been found to have behaviors consistent with autism spectrum disorder, and dogs can develop anxiety. Since all animals have sentience, it is beginning to be understood that they also experience emotions and that positive or negative experiences can have a lasting effect.
An animal’s mental health can be affected by several factors. Although, like humans, they may have a genetic predisposition to certain conditions, their environment can also play a significant factor. If deprived of necessary interaction or stimulation, animals can develop certain mental conditions.
It is for this reason that not all experts advocate for widespread mental health medication for animals. They remind us that each animal needs to be treated at an individual level. Ultimately, some behaviors may be a result of the animal’s needs not being met. Instead of jumping to conclusions about an animal’s mental state, their physical well-being also needs to be assessed. Additionally, non-medication interventions may need to be taken.
Humans should also remember that different animals exhibit different behaviors. However, when administered in carefully monitored case-by-case situations, some individual animals may benefit from mental health medication such as anti-anxiety medicines or anti-depressants.
