1. Lion Park, South Africa

In 2021, a lioness at the Lion Park near Johannesburg attacked and killed a 24-year-old named Katherine Chappell. Katherine was sitting in the passenger seat of an SUV when a lion jumped through the open window and mauled her. Her tour guide was heavily injured trying to rescue her from the animal. Despite her experience, the unexpected attack showcases the inherent risk of working closely with these powerful predators.

2. Marakele Animal Sanctuary, South Africa

In 2018, a lion at an animal sanctuary in South Africa was lured away from his gate to open it. Instead of moving away, the lion chased after him, pounced on him, and then dragged him into the bushes. The trainer did manage to get free, but not unscathed.

3. Black Sea Resort, Russia

Alexey Makarenko was performing in front of a crowd of children and their parents at Black Sea Resort in Russia. Out of seemingly nowhere, the lion clawed and sank his teeth into the circus performer. But, Alexey’s wife, who is also a trainer, managed to chase the lion away.

4. Lion Habitat Ranch, Nevada, USA

In 2010, a lion at the MGM Grand Lion Habitat attacked his trainer during a play session in front of spectators. At the time, the handler’s name was not released. But, the lion was said to be sourced from the Lion Habitat Ranch near Las Vegas which is run by Keith Evans. The incident left the trainer injured, serving as a reminder of the risks involved in handling these animals.

5. Lugansk, Ukraine

In 2019, a lion forced to perform in a circus pounced on his handler mid-act. The handler suffered injuries to his arms, legs, and back as the audience screamed at the scene.

6. Chhatbir Zoo, India

An unnamed man was seen by two buses of tourists climbing a 20-foot wall as two captive lions mauled him. One lion, named Shilpa, held the man by his neck while the other clamped his jaws around the man’s head. It had not been released to the public who that man is, but he did die from injuries at a nearby hospital.

7. Lahore, Pakistan

In 2019, Mohammed Rafique was hired as an electrician for the Sada-e-Imam Hussain congregational hall. After finishing his work, he approached caretaker Ali Raza for payment. He did not have the money and asked Rafique to come back another time. This pattern persisted until Raza unleashed his “pet” lion on Rafique. 

8. Contoonock, New Hampshire

Rose Flanders Bascom was the first American woman lion tamer. Her career started in the early 1900s in the circus. Eventually, her lion attacked her, leaving her with a deep claw wound that later got infected and killed her.

9. Doullens, France

In 2017, a 6-year-old lion attacked his handler during a live performance. Around 10o spectators were gathered in a tent at the Buffalo Circus. Just as the show was wrapping up, the handler was attacked from behind and dragged across the stage.

10. Shoalhaven Zoo and Adventure World, Australia

In 2020, 35-year-old Jennifer Brown was found moments away from death on the floor of the lion’s den. She had been attacked by two male lions as she cleaned the pen. The EMTs who rushed to the scene reported that it was one of the scariest, most horrific jobs that they had to do. 

These ten real-life examples highlight the potential risks and dangers associated with keeping lions in captivity. While each incident is distinct, they collectively underline the need for careful consideration of animal welfare and safety before deciding to confine these powerful creatures.
