In a groundbreaking appeal, the government has declared February 14th Cow Hug Day, where people are encouraged to hug the sacred animals. Cows are important within Hinduism, and they are considered sacred.
The government said in a statement that hugging a cow will “bring emotional richness” and “will increase our individual and collective happiness”. The government pointed out that the western traditions for Valentine’s day have come at a cost to the older traditions of India which is why they have declared the day Cow Hug Day.
Valentine’s Day has become popular in India over the last decade and is becoming increasingly popular. However, with the increase in popularity, there has also been a backlash for promoting “corrupt” values. The Guardian reported that some rightwing vigilante groups that have often engaged in moral policing of women have attacked shops for selling Valentine’s cards and decorations. They have even been reported for targeting couples that are holding hands, with much of the anti-Valentine’s rhetoric being targeted toward women.
Not everyone is happy about the newly declared holiday, however. Many see it as a way to take away their rights because it is brought in by the rightwing government. Looking at it from the animal, health, and environmental perspective though, it’s a win on all fronts.
Cow Hug Day is the latest initiative by the government to make reverence of the cow a nationwide policy. Most states in India ban the slaughter of cows and the selling and eating of beef. Choosing to eat vegan and live a vegan lifestyle does not harm animals, is better for your health, and is better for the environment!
