Hurricane Helene struck the Southeastern U.S., leaving a tragic aftermath. With over 200 lives lost and countless people left without access to clean water, the storm’s devastation was immense. Among the many losses was a cherished community landmark in North Carolina—the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. This bridge, beloved by locals and tourists alike, was known for its themed gardens and stunning views of Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Sadly, part of its charm, the pet memorial Rainbow Bridge, was swept away in the floods.
The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, often described as “a gateway to somewhere beautiful,” had been a community project that transformed an abandoned bridge into a vibrant outdoor space. The gardens, which featured over 200 species of plants, had become a popular spot for visitors to admire the natural beauty of the area. In 2022, volunteer artist Amy Wald created the Rainbow Bridge, a tribute to pets who had passed away.
The loss of the Rainbow Bridge struck a chord with pet lovers across the country. One TikTok user, @raising3dogs, shared a video from her spring visit to the bridge, expressing her sorrow: “I’m absolutely devastated by the news that the bridge has washed away. My heart goes out to Lake Lure & everyone affected by Hurricane Helene.” For her, the Rainbow Bridge had been a “beautiful, healing environment,” and she, like many others, held onto the hope that some of the collars might be recovered and that the bridge would one day be rebuilt.
The news of the bridge’s destruction has left many grieving once again for the pets they had memorialized there. TikTok users were deeply moved, with some expressing that the loss felt like saying goodbye to their fur babies all over again. However, some tried to find comfort in the tragedy, with one commenter suggesting, “The bridge washed away so the dogs could go help the other dogs find their way to the rainbow bridge.”
