A dad in Florida allegedly locked his daughter’s three dogs in a car for three days in the heat, which eventually led to their deaths. The 72-year-old man, Felton Charles Henderson, is now being held in jail.
His daughter was getting ready to go out of town for a couple of days and left her dogs with him so that he could watch them, according to the Escambia County Sheriff, Chip Simmons. She left her father with supplies for the dogs, but the father allegedly locked them in a Toyota Camry without anything.
The Sheriff’s Office was posted to Facebook announcing that they were seeking Henderson in connection with animal cruelty charges. Sheriff Simmons said, “She left water, she left food, everything that would be needed to take care of these dogs,” Simmons said.
When the daughter got back into town, she went to pick up her pups, and her father brought her to the car to show her the dead dogs.
While she was gone, the temperature in Cantonment, Florida, was over 90 degrees Fahrenheit all three days that the man kept the dogs in the car.
“It is apparent that all he did was put these dogs — lock these dogs — in today’s heat, yesterday’s heat, the day before yesterday’s heat, he put these dogs in his blue Toyota Camry knowing full well that they would not survive,” said Simmons.
“You can imagine the suffering they probably went through.”
Henderson has now been arrested and charged with animal cruelty.
“This is no way to treat an animal,” said Simmons. “They rely on you to give them the care and the concern, and you did none of that. So you will go to jail.”
Animal abuse is more prevalent than many may think. According to PetPedia, every 60 seconds, an animal suffers from abuse, with more than 65 percent being dogs. More than 10 million animals die from abuse every year in the US alone, not including the livestock bred for consumption, who also suffer immense abuse. Animal abuse happens everywhere and is a serious issue. We need more laws to protect animals and hold abusers accountable. Sign this petition to demand all states make all animal abuse a felony now!
