Police in Oklahoma City rescued 36 dogs from the back of a U-Haul where temperatures had reached over 100 degrees. Body camera footage from one of the officers shows the rescue. In this video, police officers can be seen lifting the back gate of the UHaul. They are greeted by the sight of cages filled with dogs. The 36 dogs appear to be of different breeds, ages, and sizes. The officers can be seen in the video offering the dogs cups of water. The poor creatures were forced to endure temperatures of over 100 degrees while they were in the back of the truck.

Fortunately, all 36 dogs were rescued alive. However, some were experiencing distress as a result of the extreme heat they were subjected to. Sadly, one dog later had to be euthanized due to organ failure. This was a direct result of the cruel conditions the dogs endured. Oklahoma City Police arrested two people and charged them with 36 counts of cruelty to animals.
As Climate change causes extreme weather and rising temperatures around the world, it is especially important to protect animals from extreme heat this summer. Both humans and other animals can experience severe physical distress and death due to high temperatures. Always be sure both humans and pets have access to clean, cool water, and shelter. Never leave your pet alone in a hot car as temperatures can soar rapidly. Additionally, be sure to report animals kept in extreme heat to authorities immediately.
