A New Jersey kennel owner, Richard Dubarton, finds himself facing animal cruelty charges after an incident at Aranwood Kennels in Mahwah. The ordeal unfolded when a customer stumbled upon a Dutch Shepherd dog clinging to life inside a garbage bag discarded in a dumpster, as per court records dated the week of Feb. 18.

Aranwood Kennels, once known as a trustworthy boarding facility for dogs, now stands under scrutiny as Dubarton faces the law. Despite his claim that “someone must’ve dumped it there,” investigators unveiled a disturbing narrative behind the canine’s ordeal. It was revealed that Dubarton had acquired the dog months prior from Irvington police after its original human surrendered the animal.

The distressing incident sheds light on deeper issues within the kennel and Dubarton’s practices. Reports indicate Dubarton’s involvement as an animal control officer across various New Jersey communities, including Plainfield. The partnership between Plainfield and Aranwood Kennels, initiated with hopes of providing reliable and compassionate care, now faces scrutiny in the wake of these allegations.

The fallout from the discovery has been substantial. Following an immediate investigation prompted by the alarming reports, Plainfield officials swiftly severed ties with the kennel, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community’s animals. Dubarton’s property yielded a harrowing revelation: 37 dogs were recovered, with court papers indicating that multiple dogs had been left outside in sub-freezing temperatures for prolonged periods. Now the rescued animals now under the care of various rescue facilities. Tragically, some may face euthanasia due to the extent of their suffering. As authorities continue their investigation, the shadows cast upon Aranwood Kennels are a reminder of the importance of accountability within animal care facilities.
