Controversy Surrounds Heritage Foundation President Over Alleged Dog-killing Incident

Kevin D. Roberts the president of The Heritage Foundation

Kevin Roberts, the president of the Heritage Foundation, faces serious allegations from former colleagues that he killed a neighbor’s dog with a shovel around 2004. According to multiple reports, the incident allegedly occurred while Roberts was an assistant professor at New Mexico State University, and his colleagues claim he confessed to the act at the time.

Five former colleagues recounted the story to The Guardian, claiming that Roberts told them he killed a pit bull because its barking was disturbing his family. Kenneth Hammond, who was the department chair of the history department at the time, remembered Roberts discussing the incident casually with other faculty members, stating he had “lost it” and killed the dog. These allegations come at a time when Roberts has taken a prominent position in conservative circles, particularly with his leadership of Project 2025, a plan for a potential second Trump presidency.

Roberts has firmly denied the accusations, presenting a different version of events. He claims that a neighbor’s pit bull attempted to jump into his yard while he was gardening with his daughter, but the dog’s human managed to restrain the animal before any harm was done. He further added that local authorities later removed more than ten dogs from the neighbor’s property due to animal abuse. However, Las Cruces Animal Control could not confirm these claims, as their records do not go back to 2004.

The situation is further complicated by the statements of Roberts’ former neighbor, Daniel Aran, who revealed that one of his pit bulls, Loca, went missing around the same time. Aran, who recently completed a prison sentence for unrelated charges, did not directly accuse Roberts of the disappearance but expressed uncertainty about what happened to his dog. Aran’s mother also denied any allegations of animal abuse on their property.

Roberts and the Heritage Foundation have responded with strong denials, calling the story a baseless hit piece. A spokesperson for the organization stated that the claims were “categorically false” and indicated they are considering legal action against The Guardian for defamation.

The controversy has surfaced at a time when other disturbing dog-related incidents involving conservative figures have also made headlines. Recently, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine criticized baseless claims made by Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, that Haitian migrants were killing and eating dogs in Springfield, Ohio. Additionally, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem caused a stir when she admitted in her memoir to shooting her dog, calling them “untrainable.”
