The Charleston Animal Society, overwhelmed with hundreds of kittens, has gained the Support of actor Tony Cavalero from “The Righteous Gemstones.” Cavalero, who has a deep love for animals, grew up surrounded by various pets, including nine cats at one point, thanks to his mother, a veterinarian technician.

Cavalero and his wife, Annie, who have two rescue dogs, are passionate advocates for animal adoption and rescue. Cavalero is leveraging his social media presence to highlight the shelter’s urgent need for fosters and adopters. The Charleston Animal Society currently houses 604 kittens, 79 cats, 27 puppies, 98 dogs, five bunnies, and several guinea pigs, despite having space for only 250 animals.

Kay Hyman, the shelter’s spokesperson, and Joe Elmore, the CEO, described the situation as dire. The shelter, which takes in 95% of Charleston County’s stray and unwanted animals, faces severe overcrowding due to peak kitten season, a decrease in spay and neuter surgeries during the pandemic, and urban development forcing more animals out of hiding.

Cavalero’s involvement began even before the shelter declared a crisis, with him volunteering over several days and committing to return. This is the third emergency declaration due to overcrowded kittens in Elmore’s 12 years at the shelter. To manage the crisis, the shelter has set up an additional air-conditioned trailer and popup pens, though these measures are not ideal for the animals’ health.
