In 2012 when Vanessa was just a puppy, her former human surrendered to her at Villalobos Rescue Center in Louisiana. They were moving and did not want to take Vanessa along with them. When they brought the young dog to Villalobos, she was kept in the back of a hot box truck. Such situations can quickly prove deadly. Luckily, Villalobos was able to take the pit bull in and give her a safe space where she could receive lots of love. Vanessa is a friendly girl who was crate-trained and well-behaved.
Sadly, Vanessa was overlooked year after year as people came to adopt from Villalobos. The sweet senior pit bull waited patiently for eleven years, but no one ever even applied to adopt her. Already facing potential stigma surrounding pit bull-type dogs, as Vanessa got older, it became even more unlikely someone would adopt her. Senior dogs are often overlooked at rescues and shelters despite being perfect for many homes. With generally lower activity levels, senior dogs are often less work than rambunctious puppies. Additionally, they may already be house trained, crate trained, and have experience living with other dogs and children.
Despite her many wonderful qualities, Vanessa continued to be overlooked as people searched for their new furry friend. However, finally, her patience paid off! Villalobos was contacted about Vanessa by a person who had previously adopted from them. The rescue was overjoyed. Vanessa will be relocating from Villalobos to her forever home in Delaware. Finally, the sweet senior pit bull got a happy ending. In her new home she will hopefully get what every dog deserves, a place where she can live out her golden years and receive all the love and attention!
Animal rescues and shelters are often a last resort for animals who may otherwise face life on the streets, inhumane living conditions, or even death. Sadly, many shelters face a lack of resources that makes it difficult for them to care for all the animals who need assistance. Sign this petition to Demand More Funding for Local Animal Shelters!
