Vanuatu is still fighting for a United Nations climate resolution even after pressure from the Trump administration helped weaken the draft. That matters because this small Pacific nation is already living with the damage richer polluters helped create. When leaders from vulnerable islands speak, the rest of the planet should listen.

According to The Guardian, the original proposal aimed to build on a landmark International Court of Justice opinion that said countries can face legal consequences if they fail to act on the climate crisis. But after pushback from the United States, Russia, and Saudi Arabia, key language on loss and damage was removed. Even so, the new draft still calls on governments to follow international law and Support a rapid, just, and quantified phase out of fossil fuels to keep warming near 1.5C.

That is not radical. It is basic survival. Vanuatu has already faced devastating storms, and one cyclone in 2015 wiped out a huge share of its economy. Hotter seas and hotter air are making these disasters worse. Meanwhile, political leaders tied to fossil fuel interests keep acting as if protecting profits matters more than people, wildlife, and the environment.

This resolution is non binding, but it still matters. Laws and norms often start with brave countries pushing the conversation forward before the most powerful nations are ready. Vanuatu is doing exactly that. It is reminding the world that climate justice is not abstract. It is about homes, food, health, and the right to a livable future.

The world should stand with countries on the front lines and choose a cleaner, fairer path grounded in climate action and plant based values.
