This fall, UC Berkeley’s Plant Futures Challenge Lab will gain a notable new addition: Miyoko Schinner, a leading figure in the plant-based food industry. Schinner, an accomplished author, entrepreneur, and advocate for sustainable food systems, will join Brittany Sartor, the Co-Founder and Program Director of the Plant Futures Initiative, in teaching the course.
Launched in 2021, the Plant Futures Challenge Lab has quickly established itself as a key platform for innovation in plant-based food and agriculture. The course, offered each spring and fall, provides students—ranging from undergraduates to PhD candidates—the opportunity to engage directly with industry leaders and tackle real-world challenges within the sector.
The Lab’s partnerships with major players in the plant-based industry, such as Beyond Meat and Tofurky, as well as cutting-edge startups like Upside Foods, enable students to contribute meaningfully to the future of food. Schinner, known for her pioneering work and compassionate approach, will bring her extensive experience to the classroom, further enriching students’ exploration of sustainable and ethical food systems.
Sartor expressed her enthusiasm about Schinner’s involvement, noting that Schinner’s contributions will be invaluable as students navigate the intersections of innovation, sustainability, and ethics in food.
