Puerto Rico recently filed a significant lawsuit against major fossil fuel companies, claiming that these corporations have misled the public about climate change and hindered the transition to renewable energy. The lawsuit seeks $1 billion in damages to help Puerto Rico manage and defend against climate-related disasters.
The Department of Justice in Puerto Rico submitted the complaint in San Juan, accusing companies like ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, Shell, and ConocoPhillips of violating trade laws by promoting fossil fuels without properly warning about their environmental risks. This lawsuit adds to a growing number of legal actions aimed at holding fossil fuel companies accountable for their role in exacerbating Climate change.
Fossil fuels are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, which intensify storms and other extreme weather events. Rising sea levels also threaten coastal regions. Despite knowing for decades about the impact of their products on Global warming, these companies continued business as usual, according to various studies.
The lawsuit highlights the future financial burden Puerto Rico expects to bear due to climate-related disasters, including hurricanes like Maria in 2017, which caused widespread devastation and long power outages. The suit demands that these companies contribute to a fund designed to mitigate climate impacts and bolster Puerto Rico’s infrastructure against future disasters.
While BP declined to comment on the lawsuit, other companies have yet to respond. Previously, 37 municipalities in Puerto Rico, along with San Juan, filed lawsuits seeking accountability for the damage caused by Hurricane Maria.
