During my visit to Capitol Hill , I was able to sit down to speak with Charla Nash, the courageous woman who five years ago suffered an unthinkable mauling by a pet chimp. She came to Washington, D.C. at my request to lobby in Support of the Captive Primate Safety Act, which seeks to ban the interstate trade in primates as pets. She spoke at a press conference with me and with lawmakers committed to passing this legislation.
Last night, she sat down with me for an exclusive interview for A Humane Nation. As you’ll see, she’s a remarkable woman with an incredible spirit, and someone who wants to be known not just as a victim, but primarily as an agent of change and reform.
I hope you’ll forward this interview to your two U.S. senators and your U.S. representative and urge them to support S. 1463/H.R. 2856. I hope you’ll also forward it to friends and colleagues and ask them to help Charla and The HSUS turn around this problem.

Wow. I’m so happy she survived and seems to be doing well. Thank you for bringing to light this issue. Can’t believe 15,000 primates as pets. That’s a huge number. And very scary!
seriously this woman CHOSE to go to a house of a person SHE knew, and KNEW there was a chimp there, and STILL chose to go there anyways, – shes trying to blame everyone for her stupid decisions because the state of CT wouldnt allow her to sue… this lady needs to accept responsibility for her own actions & move on with her life
Yeah, just like how people CHOOSE to go outside where they KNOW that people get mugged, kidnapped, shot, etc, and STILL choose to go outside anyway. People are stupid and should be blamed if any of those things happen to them, it’s their fault for going outside the safety of their home!
yeah you choose to live your life the way you decide to do it, go places you want to go, knowing the risks. you cant hold a specific person responsible or a state responsible for a decision you made knowing the risks – she knew the risks of going to her friends house who she knew had a dangerous animal with a history of being dangerous – and wanted to sue the state. its like me saying i want to go on vacation to NYC and i get mugged while there visiting… im not going to go sue the state and/or try to go to washington to try to have them ban people from walking on sidewalks because that may be where i got mugged – im not saying that people should own wild animals, just making the statement that she knew damn well it was a dangerous situation she walked into of her own volition and here now shes trying to be compensated for a bad choice she made – thats now how this world works
She’s such a brave woman. I’m glad that she’s sharing her own experience to save others.
