Loro Parque is a tourist attraction in the Canary Islands that exploits animals like orcas and dolphins for a profit, forcing them to do unnatural tricks for food in sub-standard enclosures. The park has ties to SeaWorld, which has “loaned” several animals to Loro Parque over the years, and like SeaWorld, the animals at this corrupt facility suffer immensely.

PETA investigators visited Loro Parque and reported on the animal neglect and suffering prevalent in all corners of the park, providing well-documented photos of collapsed dorsal fins, broken and missing teeth, scars and injuries, mucus-filled eyes, blatant neglect from park workers, and abnormal compulsive and destructive behaviors typical of zoochosis. To view the documented photos and report, visit here.

In an attempt to save their reputation, Loro Parque sued PETA for defamation, but a Spanish court has ruled in PETA’s favor, saying that PETA’s report, which was based on scientific research and well-documented analysis, is protected under freedom of expression laws. The court also ordered Loro Parque to pay for PETA’s legal fees for the case.

This is excellent news and an encouraging sign that society is opening its eyes to the truth of cruelty of marine parks, which can be largely credited to the critically-acclaimed documentary, Blackfish, which revealed the shocking degree of neglect and cruelty animals endure at marine parks like SeaWorld and Loro Parque.

Until all the tanks are emptied, the best way you can combat the cruelty at these parks is by never buying a ticket to visit them. And please remember to share this with your network as a reminder why wild animals belong in the wild, not in tanks.

  1. While I appreciate the good work PETA does if you’re a stray animal and then they decide you have no quality of life and put you down instead of trap and neuter. Although I agree many strays don’t have good lives but I’ve heard of many that have people helping them have good lives and even getting adopted by them so who is PETA to make that kind of decision!!!!

    1. Not all strays can find a loving home so sometimes they have to be put down. It depends also on the animals health and mental state. Most people don’t want to adopt a problem animal, it could lead to more abuse to the animal. I’m sure they do what is best all round.

    2. Sheryl Burri, who ensures that these strays receive vital heartworm and other parasitic treatments and preventatives, as well as rabies and other vital preventative treatments? It is cruel to leave these sweet unfortunate deserving beings on the streets. I hate that it has to happen, but euthanizing some is far better than leaving them to a fate of probable malnutrition, illness, stress, fear, lack of safe shelter, lack of love, etc. Now that fate would be cruel, but that is the sad reality. Thank you PETA and Mercy for Animals for all you do! These groups have been fighting for animals rights and well being for a very long time.
