In need of a little something to restore your faith in humanity, Green Monsters? This three-and-a-half minute short film called “Man of God,” by Incendiary Films, ought to do the trick. “Man of God” tells the incredible story of a homeless man living near the Bhubaneswar railway station in Odisha, India, who – although he is stricken by poverty and hunger – often chooses to feed his beloved stray dog friend, Mithu, instead of himself.
For the last three decades, sixty-year-old Kamala Lochan Baliarsingh has been struggling to eke out an existence near the railway station, having left his job and family for personal reasons. In addition to Mithu, he regularly provides whatever food he can find to six or seven other stray dogs. When “Man of God” producers offered him two packets of biscuits, he initially refused to accept them, and when he finally did, they were immediately given to Mithu.
Since “Man of God” was first published on YouTube, Baliarsingh has received multiple offers of food, money, and clothing. Let’s hope this kind-hearted man, who gives everything he has to his canine friends, is finally able to accept this kindness for himself.
The poignant closing message of the film is: “Only a hungry person can understand the pangs of hunger. Kindness is serene when nothing is expected in return and a heart which doesn’t differentiate between an animal and a human.” When you watch the video … make sure you have your hankies at the ready.
