They say that animals can tell instinctively if a person is an animal lover. Our guess is that animal lovers are usually easy to pick out. Mostly because they have remnants of treats in their pockets and bit of pet fur stuck to their jacket, but some insist that animals can “just tell.” This story of a cat who traveled 12 miles to attend the funeral of a cat lover certainly lends itself to that conclusion.
Kieran Flynn owns a funeral home in Castlemaine, Ireland and has likely seen his fair share of unusual events at funeral ceremonies. However, seeing a cat attend a funeral topped the list. The cat did not appear to belong to any of the funeral’s guests, but had made his way to the ceremony all on his own prerogative. Flynn was perplexed by the cat’s presence, but was aware of the fact that the deceased was an avid cat lover.
Taking to Facebook, Flynn wrote, “This guy turns up at Flynn’s Funeral Home in Castlemaine, Co Kerry this evening and comes in and sits down for the duration of the funeral. Never before seen anything like this to happen.”
The tabby appeared to be well-groomed and fed, leading Flynn to believe that this was not a random stray who had wondered in. Flynn recognized that this cat must have a guardian, so again he called on Facebook to ask if anyone knew the cat. Sure enough, the power of social media was able to reunite this kitty with his family. Later Flynn explained that the cat had hitched a ride to the funeral under the hood of a car. The cat had travelled all the way across the county and wound up attending the funeral of a cat lover.
While the series of events might sound like a happy accident, we can’t help but to think that perhaps this cat felt compelled to pay his respects to this feline sympathizer. Either way, we are touched and thrilled to see that the mystery cat has been returned to his family.
