One year after they were first introduced, two rescued orangutan babies Gito and Asoka are no less devoted to each other than when they first met. It is not an accident that they became so inseparable – both little orangutans are orphans who had lost their mothers.
The story of Gito’s rescue is shocking – the state he had been in when found by the rescuers of the International Animal Rescue Team in Borneo makes it seem like no less than a miracle that he survived. More and more baby orangutans are ending up motherless and in desperate need of help in order to survive because their natural homes are being ripped out from right under them. Sadly, the practice of deforestation due to the expansion of the palm oil industry is largely to blame.
Palm oil is used in 50 percent of all consumer goods, so we can all play a role in helping to minimize its impact. Click here to learn more about how palm oil production and its effects on the environment and animals.
