Ingredients You Need for Deep Dish Pizza [Vegan]

For the Dough:
  • 1 (1/4-ounce/7g) packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon organic granulated sugar
  • 3 1/4 cups (390g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus more for the bowl and pans

For the Sauce:

  • 1 (28-ounce/794g) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon organic granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes, plus more for topping

For the Pizza:

  • 1 Batch Vegan Mozzarella or 1 1/2 Cups Store-bought Vegan Mozzarella
  • 2 tablespoons shredded or grated vegan parmesan, divided, for topping
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes, divided, for topping

How to Prepare Deep Dish Pizza [Vegan]

  1. Prepare the dough: Put the yeast in 1 cup (240ml) of warm water that is between 100°F and 110°F (37°C and 43°C). Add the sugar and set aside to proof for 10 minutes, until foamy.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour and salt. Pour the proofed yeast and the oil into the bowl. Mix with a spoon until you have a shaggy dough.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a clean, lightly floured surface and knead with your hands for 5 to 10 minutes, until you can form it into a smooth ball. Oil the bowl well, return the dough to the bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and set in a warm, draft-free place, such as a turned-off oven. Allow to rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. While the dough is rising, prepare the sauce: In a medium-sized bowl, mix together all of the ingredients. Set aside until ready to use.
  5. When the dough has risen, preheat the oven to 475°F (246°C). Generously grease two 8 by 2-inch (20 by 5cm) pie pans or springform pans with oil (or work in batches if you have only one pan).
  6. Divide the dough into 2 equal portions. On a clean, lightly floured surface, roll out each portion into a 9-inch (23cm) circle that is ¼ inch (6mm) thick. Drape the dough over the greased pans and use your hands to push it into the pans, working it all the way up the sides to form the deep dish crust.
  7. Spread 3/4 cup (200g) of the vegan mozzarella over each crust. Spread half of the sauce over the cheese in each pan.
  8. Bake the pizzas for 20 minutes, then rotate the pans 180 degrees and bake for 5 more minutes. Remove from the oven and top the pizzas with the vegan parmesan, parsley, and more red pepper flakes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before cutting, then cut each pizza into 4 or 6 slices.
