Attending social events as a vegan can often feel like navigating a minefield. The recent post on r/vegan about a wedding menu mishap highlights a frustrating reality many of us face: the lack of understanding and consideration for dietary preferences. The ordeal described, where “vegan” dishes turned out to be anything but, is sadly not uncommon. As u/Acrobatic-Reality1 rightfully points out, the experience of inadvertently consuming animal products leaves a profound sense of discomfort and disappointment. It’s a reminder of why many vegans prefer to take matters into their own hands when it comes to food.
Their post reads, “I attended a wedding last night to which I submitted my dietary requirements months in advance…I was served quiche, duck fat potatoes that were served to me in a separate bowl from everyone else’s potatoes and the waiter told me were vegan, as well as the quiche for the starter – I was told it was a “vegan tart” so I ate a portion of it and realized it did not taste vegan, I also ate a potato but later found out they were fried in duck fat same as everyone else’s. The main came out and it was a fucking steak…. I told the waiter there was clearly a big mistake as I’d given my food request as vegan and her face was sheer panic.
It totally sucks that even for a (family) event where I was asked to submit my dietary requirements it can be so completely screwed up and resulted in me consuming animal products, which makes me feel really disgusting, I absolutely hate having anyone else in charge of my food and this is why.”
The sentiments echoed by others in the thread resonate deeply. Whether it’s being served inadequate or outright non-vegan options, the disregard for dietary choices is disheartening. As u/MittenClimber observes, it’s not just about inconvenience; it’s about awareness. They said, “Not surprised, people just don’t give af it’s really annoying and disheartening; and people wonder why we judge non-vegans and vegan spaces bc once you become vegan the cognitive dissonance other people show becomes SO much more obvious.”
Events like weddings should be joyous occasions for all, including those with dietary restrictions. Yet, time and again, vegans find themselves grappling with subpar options or, worse, being served animal products despite requests. As vegans, it’s essential to advocate for ourselves and, as u/Mootpoint_691 suggests, always have a backup plan.
