If you’ve been to a coffee shop recently, you’ve probably seen a number of plant-based milk alternatives like soy milk, rice milk, and almond milk. But a new vegan-friendly option is making its way to more and more coffee spots recently: oat milk.
A healthy alternative to dairy, oat milk is becoming a more and more common sight alongside more widely available vegan options like soy. Swedish company Oatly is a big part of this recent oat milk trend.
“The original idea behind Oatly was to find a way to make a nutritious liquid product for people who just didn’t like cow’s milk or were unwilling to use it for personal reasons,” said the company on its website.
According to Sprudge, Oatly is now available in over 200 cafés in New York City. Coffee company Intelligentsia even offers the oat-based beverage nationally.
Oatly’s oat milk is a good source of fiber and protein, according to the company’s website.
“We were looking for a great alternative to cow’s milk that would be able to deliver balanced nutritional benefits without taxing our natural resources and the environment,” Oatly’s general manager, Mike Messersmith, told Edible Manhattan. “Oatly has a clean ingredient label and a good blend of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and fibers.”
You can buy Oatly oat milk online, or see if your local coffeeshop offers it as an option.
